    New awards are active

Our awards curators have been working hard and I'm happy to announce that the list of awards is now complete and ready for applications.

There have been some minor changes to the award requirements and some major improvements. Here are some of the main features.

    Separate award forum
The list of awards is quite comprehensive so we have moved them to their own page to prevent overcrowding in the main forums. You can access the award claim forums using the main menu bar on the website or by clicking here.

    Band group and mode awards
Applicants can now select a specific band group and mode for their award. These range from the generic "Mixed band and mixed mode" to the specialist "VLF CW only".

    Duplicate awards dropped
Awards that had different names but same criteria with a higher number of activations have been dropped. They have been replaced by the award levels system.

    Award levels
Most of the awards now have set bronze, silver and gold levels.

Please let me know if you think we are lacking in any areas.

I would like to thank the award curators for their hard work.
    Matt - M0LMK

    Re: New awards are active

I've only looked at the "Park Life" awards, but number of site requirements are set way to high. I would expect that most /P operators have two or three local spots that they use regularly, and even the Bronze award is now out of their reach.
I'm very disappointed that the requirements have been so inflated from the initial versions. :-( I though this was going to be a "fun" set of awards, not something that seems to have already been invaded by the "contest" mentality :-(

All feed back is good feedback Peter

Nothing is set in stone at this stage and I am with you on the levels being a bit high.

Maybe you could suggest what levels you think bronze, silver and gold should be set at?

    Re: New awards are active

As I said I've not looked at any of the other awards.
I have a small "ulterior motive" here. Here in Essex we are trying to encourage new licensees (novice and intermediate) to try portable operating as a way of getting QRV on HF. We all know there are advantages compared to setting up a station at home, and for a new operator it will give them some "air time" without having to sort out the inevitable issues involved with setting up a station and installing antennas at home.

So I would like to see the base level of awards to be quite easy to achieve as an incentive to the new operators to go out and find a few sites to operate from. 4 or 5 sites should be easy enough to achieve by asking round the local /P operators and using some already know sites. To me setting the entry point at 10 sites could require travelling significant distances from the start, and I think this club should be all about the operating and equipment without the need to travel half way across the country to reach a distant SOTA hill or a rare WAB square. Let's leave that sort of thing to SOTA and WAB who already do it well. I think this club could succeed by providing a less daunting entry point for new /P operators while still providing a challenging and progressive award scheme.

    Just my 2p's worth Matt.

It may just be your 2p's but it's priceless feedback for me

I see the point about easy entry. The main aim of ARPOC is just to encourage portable operating and yes, we don't want to get involved to the depth of SOTA or WAB (now where did I put my book!). Simple and easily accessible is what we want.

I've put the topic up for discussion with the award curators so I should be able to provide some answers soon.

    Re: New awards are active

We have set the award levels to 5 for Bronze, 10 for Silver and 25 for Gold. That should allow for easy entry but still need a reasonable level of dedication to achieve the Gold award.

If we find that members want to go higher then we will introduce a "Platinum" level award and maybe a very difficult "Unobtanium" level too.

    How does that sound?
