Portable directional hf antenna.

I have been thinking about how to get some directivety on my portable antennas. The easiest way i think is to tilt an dipole, or build an gp with the radials pointing in the direction you want the signal to travel. I's there any thoughts about if one is better than the other?

I once talked to an ham whom was sitting on the beach some where in the uk. I think he told me that he was using an 1/4 wave or vertical dipole with an reflector behind it. Does anyone know what kind of setup this is, and have any more information about it. Like the size of the reflector, and distance to the driven element.

Thank you for any innput.
